The tricolored blackbird population in California has declined to a point that it's a candidate for the California Endangered Species List. But efforts are underway to keep the bird from disappearing.

A Troubling Snag in the Comeback of the California Condor.

The condors number close to 450, over half of which are wild. While an outright ban on lead ammunition won’t kick in until 2019, aggressive public education has helped safeguard the species—inland at least. But scientists have found a new threat to the reestablished condors:

California Fish and Game Commission to weigh in on spotted owl, Delta bass.

Should the northern spotted owl – whose federal conservation status in the 1990s hit the state’s timber industry – receive even more protection under the state’s Endangered Species Act?

How a tiny bird — along with butterflies, and bureaucracy — create a big obstacle for one eco-developer.

For decades, two forces — steady and powerful as the tides — have collided on the California coast.

The desire to build, and the desire to conserve.

100 years of national parks, 100 years of climate change data.

All scientists follow in the footsteps of earlier scientists. Steve Beissinger, Jim Patton and their colleagues at UC Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology take this more literally than most. Since 2005, they have tried to walk exactly where their predecessors walked 100 years ago, in an attempt to understand where California’s native animals are heading in a warming climate.

Bird Watch: Birds of the great state of California.

According to Wikipedia, which shows a comprehensive listing of all the bird species seen naturally in the state of California, as determined by the California Birds Records Committee (CBRC), as of 2009, there are 641 species native to the state list. Fifteen of these species are introduced, species that are non-native to California but now have established populations. Two of these species are extirpated, species that are native to California but no longer have established populations here, although they still do in other places.
