Protections for 4-inch California gnatcatcher hinder plans for Palos Verdes housing development.

The coastal bird has been on the threatened-species list for more than 25 years, providing its natural habitat certain protections by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Those protections, in turn, have run afoul of housing developers for years; a judge, for example, dismissed a case earlier this year that attempted to have the bird removed from the designation.

California spotted owl no longer considered endangered by experts.

On November 7 the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announced it will take the protection of the California Spotted Owl off of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) after a thorough review of its current status in the wild. Consultation amongst experts on the status of the formerly endangered species was done so through site surveys and scientific literature compiled by the service. The USFWS determined the species is not currently at risk of being endangered in their historic natural habitats, nor do they believe they shall be in the foreseeable future.

Wintu Audubon Society Presents “California Birds in a Changing Climate.”

National Audubon has determined that 50% of birds will be threatened by the climate crisis within the current human lifetime. As our climate changes, the entire web of life must adapt or perish. If a flower blooms earlier due to increased temperatures, insects that depend on that flower must hatch earlier, and birds that consume those insects must arrive from their spring migration earlier. How much life’s web and the birds that are part of it will be able to adapt to this change is uncertain.

San Diego Christmas Bird Count

For Justyn's e-mail, send me a message on iNat and I'll provide it.

Hello,

If you're receiving this email, you've either participated in or expressed interest in the San Diego Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This year, it's on 14 December, the first Saturday of the count period. Please RSVP ASAP. Let me know if you can join us, as well as the names and email addresses of any team members if you're answering for a larger group. If you've not participated previously, please let me know your level of experience - all are welcome, but I like to make sure interested beginners are part of a more experienced group. If you are no longer in the area or interested in receiving these emails, just say so.

As always, the compilation and lunch - courtesy of San Diego Audubon - will be at 1pm at Marina View Park (aka "J Street") in Chula Vista. Anyone wishing to, or unable to make that, should contact me ahead of time to let me know what species you've seen that morning. We missed Great Horned Owl last year, so special owling efforts will be necessary to avoid that again.

Details specific to your area will be provided once I know who's where this year.

Thanks,
Justyn Stahl, compiler
