Tree I bought in Phoenix and planted here 20 years ago since it should be able to grow in Sunset Magazine’s Zone 10. It gets damaged below 12° and was killed to the ground in subzero temperatures in 2011, but resprouted. Doesn’t grow nearly as fast as in Phoenix and is only just now getting a lot of flowers. Much nicer than Retama. Would probably do better in a more protected location with no direct north exposure.
I counted 10 living oaks and one recently dead one in rainwater harvesting basins all throughout the Pavillions parking lot. I only found one small acorn on a tree, but caps on the ground show that at least that tree produced more acorns earlier in the year.
The basins seem shallow and ineffective. I doubt these trees are irrigated and suspect they would be larger if they had access to more runoff.
