Interesting. Thanks Scott. The NZ Organisms Register is still using Torpedo fairchildi but it's possible that's out-of-date.

Looks like its Tetronarce fairchildi in Fishbase http://www.fishbase.se/summary/Tetronarce-fairchildi.html
But we can accommodate explicit discrepancies from Fishbase if needed. I just want to be more rigorous about documenting when and how we're deviating from the taxonomic reference

Thanks Scott. We're happy to follow the global consensus. I don't have the expertise to comment on Tetronarce.

@clinton Are you familiar with the most up-to-date name for Torpedo fairchildi in use in New Zealand? Is the Fishbase synonymy with Tetronarce fairchildi appropriate?

On that note, my incentive for updating the iNat shark/ray taxonomy was so that we could mark the clade as 'complete'. Check the 'total species observed' and 'trends -> discoveries' stats here: https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/47273-Elasmobranchii
we can make as many 'explicit discrepancies' from Fishbase as we want and I'll just add them to the script that syncs with Fishbase. The only downside is we have to explicitly define them so they can be excluded from the script

@jon_sullivan Yes, its been Tetronarce for a while now. In fact Last et al. (2016) Rays of the World have synonymised many Tetronarce spp, including T. fairchildi, with T. nobiliana but we still recognise T. fairchildi here in NZ.

clinton - iNat's Elasmobranchii is now totally in sync with Fishbase - if there's anywhere that you'd prefer we deviate from Fishbase please let me know and we can add them as explicit discrepancies
