This week we are seeing flowers beginning to bloom in the alpine areas of the White Mountains in NH.

Fellow iNaturalists have reported Diapensia in flower on Mount Jackson and lapland azalea in bud with few moving to flower in the alpine garden. Join us in capturing alpine flowering and other plant stages this season.

Many hikers visiting the White Mountains, NH want to know will they see alpine flowers. They may know about the famous Alpine Garden which is accessible by driving up the Mount Washington Auto Road then via a trail head just above the 6-mile post.

So what is in bloom?

My research intern stationed at Lakes of the Clouds Hut was there Monday June 11th, 2018 and reports that Diapensia is well on its way moving past its peak, Mountain Avens and Labrador Tea are just getting started and Mountain Cranberry has a ways to go. You can also see for yourself by exploring the iNaturalist observations around Mount Washington.

Hello everyone!

This is Lauren the Lakes intern straight from the summit to give you an updated look at the alpine garden. This is a great weekend to come up and see the mountain avens. By the Lakes of the Clouds hut there is a beautiful field of avens. You will also see splashes of pink and red as the bog bilberry and mountain cranberry are just starting to flower. Unfortunately Diapensia is well past bloom, but you can look for their ripening fruits. Other species that are currently blooming include mountain sandwort (small white flowers) and bog laurel (pink flowers). If you find yourself in a wet area keep an eye out for cotton sedge.
