The monarch butterfly fluttered a step closer to extinction Thursday, as scientists put the iconic orange-and-black insect on the endangered list because of its fast dwindling numbers.

"This is one of the most recognizable butterflies in the world," Stuart Pimm, an ecologist at Duke University, said.

Starting soon! From July 29 to August 7, we invite you to join fellow monarch community scientists across the US, Mexico, and Canada to look for milkweed plants and examine them for monarch eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and butterflies.
