Hi everyone,
The annual City Nature Challenge is getting ready to start TOMORROW and we need your help! Between Friday, April 26 and Monday, April 29, we need you to help us find as many species as possible using iNaturalist. All iNaturalist observations from: Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Buena Vista, Covington, Highland, Lexington, Rockbridge, Staunton, Waynesboro City/Counties will automatically be counted towards the Challenge.
I’ve tagged you in this post because you are a top observer in the area. It is top iNat observers like you that will really help push us ahead in number of observations made and species recorded in Virginia.
The City Nature Challenge is an international effort for people to find and document what lives in communities across the globe. There are over 650 locations participating this year so it will be great to see what everyone finds!
You can find the Challenge: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-allegheny-and-shenandoah-mountains
For more information and for a list of events happening across Virginia area during this challenge, please visit our website at www.nature.org/CityNatureVa. Make observations on your own, or join us for a hike!
Let me know if you have any questions. Spread the word!

I won't be in the area this weekend (I live in DC), but so glad to see this message and wishing you all the best! The weather forecast is looking good! :-D
Likewise! I am actually from Massachusetts, seems like I have a great deal of observations though from there lol.
I wish y'all a good CNC though!
Thanks for letting me know @carrieseltzer --actually DC is also participating in the City Nature Challenge! Any observations you make in the DC Metro area this weekend (starting tomorrow) will automatically count, but you can also track progress by joining that project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-washington-dc-metro-area
@radbackedsalamander, thanks for letting me know you're in Massachusetts. You might be interested in joining the Global Project for CNC. Note that you actually have to join this one for your observations to count towards CNC: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-global-project
I'll be in TN at the Roan Mtn Spring Naturalists Rally. Unfortunately, these two events always conflict.
@denisewill - Thanks for letting us know. I hope you have a great time in TN! You can still participate in the Challenge, but you have to join the Global Project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-global-project. I hope you can make some new-to-you observations while you're at the Rally.
Do I need to join? I couldn't find Allegheny Shenandoah in the list.
@sjryan, you don't have to join for your observations to count for CNC. They will count automatically if you're in any of these locations: Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Buena Vista, Covington, Highland, Lexington, Rockbridge, Staunton, Waynesboro. But, if you want to track progress for Allegheny and Shenandoah Mountains you can join here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-allegheny-and-shenandoah-mountains
ahh shucks I dont think ill be in the area ether. but will keep posting along the way.
