Descrição

Resting on the grass some distance from where the other skipper was seen, this one gave me more time for photos before it moved on. The sky was partly sunny, it was a warm 22 C, out of the breeze off the Bay The morning was a cool 16 C with cloudy skies and fog; there were 2 or 3 Whites, a Yellow, and at least 2 Silvery Blues flying over the field and I could not get a shot of them. All the dandelions are finished flowering in the field, but there are hawkweed, red clover, and eastern Rocket still blooming, but they are finishing up, so perhaps there's not much nectar in that field at the present time.

The butterfly was resting in the grass and I just happened to see its colourful wings as I passed by, and managed a few shots of it before it moved on. The sky was partly sunny, and the afternoon warmed up to 22 C after a cool 12 C under cloudy skies and fog this morning. There was a breeze off the Bay but it was more sheltered from that breeze where the butterfly was seen.

This White was feeding on Eastern Rocket, the only one I saw during my 30 minute stay there that was feeding, all the others, including Yellows and Silvery blues, were flying around their territory, hardly ever stopping more than a few seconds on a plant before continuing on' so not ideal for the photographer. A sunny afternoon, a warm breeze in off the Bay, 22 C.

Língua-de-Ovelha (Plantago lanceolata)

Observador

saltmarsh

Data

Junho 7, 2024 02:24 PM ADT

Descrição

This plantain grows in patches in the hayfield, in some areas it is dominant with the ground nearly bare and dry around it. Song birds, which are plentiful here, eat the seeds of the plant. "Plantago lanceolata is host to many different species of the order Lepidoptera. Species such as Junonia coenia, Spilosoma congrua, and Melitaea cinxia lay their eggs on P. lanceolata plants so they can serve as a food source for the larvae when they hatch.[15][16] The iridoid glycosides in the plant leaves accumulate in the caterpillars and make them unpalatable to predators."

This Skipper was on field bind weed before moving off to land on some grassy plant in the hayfield. I got only a glancing picture of its underside as it was sunning itself. The morning had been cool but now the sky was mostly sunny, there was a breeze in off the Bay but the temperature had risen to 18 C. INat lists the skipper as Carterocephalus-mandan, but my butterfly book calls it Carterocephalus palaemon. It is found, my book says, from Labrador to Alaska, and on the mountains of Idaho and Montana.

Descrição

The White butterflies take nectar from the flowers of this plant in the mustard family, and often rest on the plant as well. This plant is growing on the edge of the hayfield next to the saltmarsh. I've seen a # of butterflies in the White family briefly on the flowers, not long enough, probably, for sustenance or ovipositing. It is a common weed in the hayfields and some roadsides here. The stems and leaves are somewhat prickly and feel sharp and irritable to the skin. There are 4 petals to the flowers born at the top of the plants, and seed pods are on separate stems just below the flowers.
