Creosote bushes are not where actual creosote comes from. They got their name because of a pungent smell kind of like creosote especially after it rains. Native Americans used this bush for multiple different remedies including colds, intestinal discomfort, cancer, nausea, swollen limbs, body odor and many other things. It is found in all three southwestern US deserts. Creosote bushes survive because they taste bad so it keeps a lot of the grazers away.
