When Ashe juniper grows up inside a woodland, it develops a single, straight trunk. Also, the branches are less angled, some are even horizontal. No, this is NOT an Eastern red cedar. See the closeup of the leaves and notice the cup-like curve of each leaflet. Eastern red cedar leaflets are almost straight and more pointed.

This is the Refuge champion Ashe Juniper, in the Post Oak Creek watershed. This observation dates from when I first encountered the grove of trees. We subsequently made formal measurements on it and it was just shy of a state champion.

Water Oak observed along a natural greenbelt trail and unnamed small creek in Wood Glen subdivision of Round Rock TX. Unusual location for this species, this far west.
