Almost ran over this very sick California Vole that was on Coyote Creek Trail. It looked like it didn't have much longer to live.
It was behaving very lethargically, exhibiting absolutely no fear of me, and was actually approaching me trying to hide under my body.
It moved about in a slow (for and vole) and shaky manner.
After about 25 minutes of watching it, it was starting to lose control of its body, and whenever it tried to move it would stumble or whip its legs around. When I nudged it with my foot and flipped it over it lied there until I flipped it back over again.
It would often lie down with its head on the ground, all stretched out, or curl up into a shaky ball.
Not sure what's going on here. No puncture wounds that would suggest a rattlesnake bite.
I've also noticed an increased amount of dead voles along the Parkway's trails, some dead from being run over by bikes (possibly because of the slow behavior that this one was exhibiting), partially consumed, or completely whole and looking on good physical shape.
To any rodent disease experts out there I would really like to know what's going on. Is it possibly connected with a population explosion (maybe due to larger numbers of rattlesnakes in the Parkway)?

E. R. Hall and his assistant D. C. Smiley trapped small mammals at a location along what is now County Rd 447 noted as "15 mi. NNW of Deephole, Washoe Co., Nev.". This location and the description of it by Smiley were inferred from perusing Smiley's field notes from that trapping period.

Yellow-Bellied Marmot exhibiting cannibalistic behavior. I did not witness the killing of the younger marmot so I can't say whether this is opportunistic or aggressive cannibalism. Marmot ran across the path behind me and proceeded to tear at the prey marmot after getting far enough away from me to feel comfortable.
