First time seeing one of these guys along the American River Parkway. The groundcover was carefully returned to its original position after these pictures were taken.

This salamander I'm not 100% certain, but based on what I have read on Cal Herps I believe this is what it is. Really I found very little info on how to separate Hell Hollow from California since those are the only two in this area that occur together. So the reasons I believe this is Hell Hollow is it does appear to have a more bulbous head making it appear to have a neck. The overall body to leg proportions shows the legs look a little larger, but that is hard to judge not having a California to compare with. The biggest thing was habitat. This was on the north slope of the North Fork American River in Auburn State Recreation Area. I found 2 individuals under large rocks at the base of a steep ravine slope along the trail. Habitat was live oak, chaparral, grey pine.
