Orange pores, staining blue, growth under two needle Pinus. Glandular dots on stipe.
Close to either H. scrobiculatum group, or perhaps H. diabolus? Larger than H. peckii.
Slight red guttation, soft cap, spines not changing color but swelling in KOH (3&4)
Cap not zonate, lumpy with ridges.
In fir, Tsuga, Thuja, Pseudotsuga forests bordering alpine marsh habitat.
Drying to a chocolatey brown color. Up to 17cm across. Too large for Peckii- regretfully I did not taste. Growing through the material around it. A pleasant odor, somewhat like a candle or a soap.
The 5th photo in matchmaker under H. scrobiculatum group by A & O Ceska resembles this.
A second fruiting was found.
On Larix in dry area above the lake.
The most pungent odor of sweetbread. Growing under Tsuga heterophylla.
