The first time I've seen this bird around West Melton. Initially, it was perched on a fence and let me approach to within a few metres, although it was flicking it's tail in agitation. I suspect it's a female or juvenile tomtit.

I've monitored this species in Whanganui (the first place it was recorded in NZ) for> 20 years and it has not spread far beyond the early sites, within about 1 km radius. Its spread has been much slower than I'd anticipated. No-one, apart from some householders, has attempted to control it. However, any new site, like Banks Peninsula, should try and eliminate it asap.
