Common on open eroding slope.

Female plant, in heavy fruit. I had never seen this species in such spectacular fruiting display. Why not promote this species in the nursery trade? Easily as showy as any Ilex, and able to withstand poor, dry soil conditions!

LEAVES:
-7 to 9 leaflets

BARK:
-tight bark

FRUIT:
-nuts with thick husk that splits completely to the base (husk much thicker than bitternut, similar to thickness or slightly thinner than on typical shagbarks)
-smooth, un-ribbed nut with sharp point and thin, brittle shell
-nut meat is sweet-tasting with pleasant flavour

TWIGS & BUDS:
-thick twigs (thicker than what is typical for either of the parent species)
-large, naked buds covered in velvety hairs

NOTE:
The 6th picture shows the twig of this putative Carya x laneyi in between each of the parent species. A pure C. ovata twig is placed on the left, and a pure C. cordiformis twig is placed on the right.

Salix humilis var. hyporhisa in Braun (=Salix humilis var. humilis).

Rare; single declining shrub up to 5' tall in prairie-like opening on eroding slope; leaves thick-textured and rugose above, glabrous but strongly glaucous below.

This plant reached just high enough above the browse line to escape hungry deer, but it showed evidence of past browse. There were a few low sprouts nearby; they will never reach mature fruiting height under the current deer browse pressure.
