National Moth Week
Looking for an activity that’s safe, fun and enriching for all ages while social distancing or sheltering at home?
The ninth annual National Moth Week, July 18-26, invites novice and experienced “moth-ers,” alike, to observe these fascinating creatures in their own backyards and contribute to our scientific knowledge as part of one of the world’s largest citizen science projects.
As people likely will continue avoiding crowds this winter to slow the spread of COVID-19 infections, National Moth Week (NMW) offers the opportunity to learn about night-time nature from the safety of backyards and gardens; porches, decks and balconies – anywhere a light can be turned on.

Thanks for posting this @tonyrebelo. Please could we add the same to the Botswana Moths project which you started @tuli ? I think there should be an International Moth Week !!!

It is international, that's why it's in the northern summer, I seem to remember that @hkmoths usually get us organised on iNat
I think the name should be Internatioanl Moth Week or Global Moth Week to stress its international reach.

@tonyrebelo Its too cold in Gaborone Botswana ! I dont think we can get many moths. Last year I had some moths because I was 300 km further north in Botswana where the temp is 4-5 degrees higher on cold nights. I think its better to plan events for a time of year when moths abound. I really dont think there wlll be any moths at a normal exterior house light and only one or two at a UV lamp if this cold spell continues !Last year there were only 30 moth observations in Gaborone, which is 4 per night and only 13 species. Not very exciting. This year is so cold here !
Well, we should contribute what we can, and contemplate a southern "International" Moth Hunt of our own!
I dont particularly want to tread on LepSocs toes - I am sure that they organize a spring event similar to this.
Although I have no doubt that they will find iNaturalist the best tool for organizing, identifying and summarizing such an event.
National Moth is a Northern Hemisphere thing.
For something like that to work should be split in at least an International Moth week for the Northern hemisphere and one for the Southern Hemisphere. As it is, it is targeted at the Northern Hemisphere.
Very few moth are on the wing in the middle of winter here in Southern Africa.

@tonyrebelo @johanheyns Don't we already have a mothing event as part of the Great Southern Bioblitz GSB in Oct/Nov and could this be extended to a week, To kill two birds with one stone.
I shall take part In the 'Northern Hemisphere' event on a small scale because I find it interesting to see what moths become active in July.
Some very odd moths become activated by the cold in Botswana, which I never see when it is warmer. It seems that for some, cold weather promotes emergence and a sex life. I do think July moths deserve special attention and perhaps too many moth enthusiasts are hibernating when the nights are freezing and some interesting, rarely seen moths are activated.
