Come join the fun from the 18th to 27th September 2020 for the Great Kererū Count, NZ’s only large-scale community science project dedicated to kererū.

Kererū are as Kiwi as kiwi! Kererū only live in Aotearoa New Zealand. Whether you love their classic white singlets, their whooping wing-beats, or their awesome aerial acrobatics, kererū are especially unique to us. As well as being real characters of our bush, they are also known as the gardeners of the sky – spreading precious seeds of our forest giants such as tawa, hīnau and miro.

The Great Kererū Count is about New Zealand working together to create a statistically significant data set on kererū so we can understand what we can do to help them thrive.

For 10 days each year, thousands of New Zealander’s make observations about the presence or absence of kererū, their location and their behaviour. Over the past 6 year’s New Zealand community scientists have contributed to a total of 41,755 observations and 98,401 kererū
