Batch Adding Observations

Hello Fellow Naturalists,

Adding observations to projects can be tedious at times, especially if you have a lot of them. To simplify the process you can utilize the batch feature after filtering your observations to the requirements of the project when using the search feature.

The easiest way is to use the link in the right box below the most recent members list on the projects homepage (Add from your observations).

Alternatively you can use the following link to list your observations that are applicable to the project.

Copy and paste (or click) this link into your browsers address bar and replace USERNAME with your user name.

http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/USERNAME?has%5B%5D=photos&has%5B%5D=geo&not_in_project=flora-of-california&place_id%5B%5D=14&taxon_ids%5B%5D=47126&verifiable=any

If that doesn't work select search from your observations page and use the following filters.

Check the box w/ photos
Place: California, US State
Taxon: Plants (Kingdom Plantae)

The click the Search button.

Once the list comes up click on the Batch edit button -> Select all -> Add to project -> Flora of California.

Important Note: You have to join the project in order for it to be listed in the Add to project drop down. :)

Thanks for the tip---I will work on adding my observations in batches. One comment on the project---the list of fields that pops up when adding observations singly is intimidating for me. I realize that none of them are required but I wonder if users just adding their first observation will be put off. While the perfectionist in me dislikes leaving any fields blank, in the interest of time I personally will try to fill out the fields that describe details only I, as the observer, can provide (community fields/density), and Calflora link if I already have it open. I'm so happy to see a project for California plants!

Yes, I agree the observation fields can be off putting, even for me and I'm the one that added them. :)

When you batch add there will be no prompt to fill out the observation fields. I agree there are fields only the observer can know, density being the first and foremost. The primary purpose of the observation fields are to make the observations more scientifically usable. Secondarily for educational purposes. They are a work in progress. Once I am done with adding (or removing) observation fields I will post a journal entry that covers how to use each observation field.

You are in no way obligated to fill out the fields. Use them (some or all) if you know the information and have the time to fill out the fields and/or want to expand your knowledge base with regard to that particular plant. It is OK if you just close the prompt window as well when adding a single observation or click on the "remove" for fields you are unsure about.

Thanks much for your input and contributions to the project. :)

Thanks for the encouragement, @digibirdtrek ! I just added roughly 500 plant observations to the project. Those will have to remain "field-less", but I will do my best to fill out some of the fields in future observations. You will see a lot of marine algae among my observations, when I was an undergrad all algae were outside of Plantae, but now reds and green fall within and so the batch edit included them. Are algae outside the intended scope of your project? If so, I can remove them.

If it is in kingdom Plantae then it is applicable to the project and I will add the reds and greens when I see them. That said, the focus is more on higher plants and how introduced plants are impacting native plants and plant/natural communities. Don't let that stop you from adding your green and red algae to the project though.

Hi @digibirdtrek Thanks for a great project! I really like how you addressed the batch upload feature. Do you mind if I copy your instructions for our projects. Thanks Mark

Hi @digibirdtrek. Please invite the members of the California invasive plant fb page.
Though, I can't figure out how to join the project.
