Madrid Park 3.28.14

Today I will add observations I made at Madrid Park on 3.28.2014, they may seem very ordinary to many people, but they are very significant to me. 1 and a half years ago this area was an empty space under some billboards at the intersection of the 10 and 605 freeways in the San Gabriel Valley. It was a dumping ground for all sorts of unwanted junk. Today it is a multi-use park with exercise equipment, trails and educational signs for the humans and native plants for the other animals. My son and I have been observing this park since June 2013. It has mostly boasted hummingbirds and lizards and insects. Kingbirds and Kestrels have perched on the billboards and fences and various flycatchers have sallied in and out, but until now fence lizards and insects have been the major residents. Yesterday was different. I photographed 20 species and made note of several more. Many thanks to Amigos de Los Rios, the organization that created this space.
