Arcata Marsh - February 2, 2019

Arrived at 569 South G Street, Arcata CA at 12:15.
Despite the rain that was expected, the weather was quite sunny when we arrived. As we made our way to the first avocet observation spot there were many species of birds, including a Black Phoebe that was feeding.
At 12:34 we arrived at Klopp Lake, the first observation spot for the avocets. The tide was high and we were not able to distinguish any avocets from the many birds that were around. Saw many ducks in the lake and saw a lot of fennel.
At 1:22 we arrived at the second avocet observation spot, oxidation pond 2. The tide was still high and the wind had picked up so it was a bit chilly. Based on a prior group there had been avocets there but by the time that we arrived the avocets were too far to be determined even with the scopes.
At 1:32 we arrived at the example willow tree and learned how to collect the data needed and pictures. Out of the four pictures needed one of the canopy, one of the whole tree, and two of the most developed and least developed are needed.
By 2:20 my group and I claimed tree #10 as ours. During our observations we determined that the tree is male by the type of flowers it had. After taking the data we figured out the positions of where we wanted to take all four of the pictures and marked them with black and white tape.
At 3 we headed back to meet up with our group and by about 3:30 we had boarded the buses and left.
