A large, shiny, jet-black cricket. Note especially the entirely black head. This species reaches adulthood beginning in early August and continues through the fall. The Spring Field Cricket (G. veletis) is morphologically very similar but reaches adulthood in June. Two other superficially similar Gryllus species (G. vernalis and G. fultoni) occur in southern Iowa but occur in woodlands and woodland edges and not around human-modified landscapes. They also have a head narrower than the pronotum.
