Western Fence Lizard

Sceloporus occidentalis

Summary of the Plant's Interactions and Niche 2

The western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) is a common lizard of Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Northern Mexico, and the surrounding area. Because the ventral abdomen of an adult is characteristically blue, it is also known as blue-belly. They are the species with the least concern because they have a tolerance to wide range of areas, having a high population. Avoids wet forests and very hot deserts. Its blood will actually help to clear the tics of their carrying bacteria, which helps the ecosystem from suffering more effects from the disease. It also eats the insects that cause disease problems (Burke Museum). They are a very common lizard in California. Their diet consists of insects and spiders. It is located under logs and changes its position towards or the sun or not in order to maintain thermal regulation. The males are territorial and will do push-ups to impress the females. To avoid predators, they will have to drop their tails in a last-ditch error to avoid getting eaten while regenerating their tail with their stored energy somewhere else (Las Pilitas Nursery).
