Mid-Summer Update

Hi everyone! This past week has been busy at the Tobin Preserve! Last weekend the Kent Land Trust and I held a hike at the Tobin Preserve following the board meeting that morning. We opened the hike up to the public so that it could be apart of the Kent Land Trust’s summer exploration challenge. I also used this hike as a way to introduce myself and educate more people about what I have been up to this summer, especially iNaturalist. We were able to hike the Meadow Trail leading to the Stone Wall Trail. We had beautiful weather, some great conversations, and were able to meet some new people. Then this past Wednesday, we had a camp group from the Sharon Audubon come for a bird banding demonstration. The kids had a lot of fun learning about bird banding, having a chance to touch and/or release some of the birds caught that morning, and most importantly increase their knowledge about birds by performing identifications!

Lots of fun happening here at the Tobin Preserve! Be sure to stay on the lookout for our next event! For more information, email info@kentlandtrust.org :)

Getting Started!

Hi all! My name is Alexis Freudenberg and I am the inaugural Kelly Alisha Tobin Intern for the Kent Land Trust this summer! Throughout this internship, my goal this summer has been to focus on the Robert and Audrey Tobin Preserve so that I can draft and create the framework for a variety of different educational programs to take place at the Tobin Preserve. Thanks to a very generous donation by Audrey and Robert Tobin, the Kent Land Trust was able to purchase this land in 2012 in hopes that it would allow public access for pleasure and education for many years to come. Since then, the Kent Land Trust has created 3 trails throughout the Preserve to help further their vision. For more information regarding the Preserve or the Preserve’s history, please visit https://www.kentlandtrust.org/anchor-page-for-tobin-preserve.

Following along with Audrey and Robert Tobin’s vision for the property, part of my task this summer has consisted of creating and maintaining this iNaturalist project. This project will hopefully provide a multitude of different benefits to the Preserve and its visitors that will allow users to track any and/or all observed species for future reference. Beyond that, I hope this app and project combined can help engage the public even more by facilitating and encouraging interest with all things regarding the Preserve. Through this “News” feature on the Tobin Preserve project, I, as well as other admin’s and/or future interns, will have the ability to share all of the fun, exciting, and educational things that take place from here on out! Then hopefully, once the project has expanded, beyond just my observations, we can hold iNaturalist challenges such as observations of the month, themed observations and so on. With that being said, I hope everyone enjoys all the observations so far and are hopefully interested in following along and/or participating in this journey!
