November 30, 2019 (Saturday) 3pm-5pm
Weather: Light intermittent drizzle while I walked. Chilly but not really cold (high 40s-low 50s).
Other roadkill: None.
Coverage: Aldercroft Heights Road intersection to just after the big Soda Springs road bend (37°11'07.5"N 121°59'07.8"W).
Rainfall: (MTD: 3.40 in; YTD: 3.48 in)
Traffic: Light traffic; around 20 cars or so.

The dead newts were all fresh. All of the alive newts and most of the dead newts I saw were heading east, away from the reservoir. They were also concentrated in two areas:

Talked briefly to a couple of friendly Midpen Open Space rangers who pulled over to check I was okay. They knew there was a "newt person" who'd been surveying (one of them apparently met Anne once), and I told them there'd be a bunch of people surveying this year.

December 4, 2019 (Wednesday) 11:30am-1:30pm
Weather: Had just finished raining. Overcast and 53F.
Other roadkill: 1 Western Toad, 1 California Slender Salamander, 1 Western Fence Lizard, 1 (Bull?)frog.
Coverage: Aldercroft Heights Road intersection to just after the big Soda Springs road bend (37°11'12.6"N 121°59'09.5"W).
Rainfall: MTD: 2.73 in; YTD: 6.21 in
Traffic: Light. 13 vehicles, half of which were local traffic (saw them entering/exiting spur roads).

Today there was a section just south of the Soda Springs bend that had a bunch of tiny baby newts, both alive (the only live ones I saw today) and flattened. Here's a very cute live one being moved off the road to newt another day: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/36368929
Today again all the living newts were heading away from the reservoir.

December 4, 2019 (Wednesday) 9:30 am – 11:30 pm
About a week since the rain started.
During the survey it was drizzling part of the time. I documented 101 dead newts, some were fresh, some have been there for a few days, but since I only saw one the previous time, I documented them all.
Other roadkills: one toad, one other amphibian, one millipede. I saw only one live newt, but it wasn't crossing the road, it was under a log (I haven't added it to the live newt project).
Coverage: north part - Jones trailhead to the stop sign (37.187875, -121.986516) plus spot-checked the Jones Trail trailhead.
Rainfall: (MTD: 5.26 in; YTD: 8.11 in) The weather was cold and wet, drizzle.
Traffic: Light traffic. Five gravel trucks, two maintenance trucks, 16 cars. The county parks truck was clearing the road, probably removing some more dead newts.

My first time patrolling and posting, so please let me know if I've missed anything. Oh, and please remind me where you get the rainfall amount from, so I can be consistent.

Today I walked the South side, from the stop sign to Aldercroft, 8:40am-10:50am. It rained here last night, was windy, today there are low clouds and it's close to rain but no rain, my car said 64F outside.

77 dead newts, 1 dead frog. There were 3 that I thought were salamanders, but @truthseqr says that they're actually newts whose outer skin has gone.

No live newts or other critters seen. 18 vehicles, 2 joggers and a bicyclist passed by. I swear the maples are significantly more vivid yellow this year.

Today I walked the South side, from the stop sign to Aldercroft, 12:37pm - 2:28pm. Relatively dry conditions, temperature around 70F, low clouds rolling over the hills nearby, partly cloudy on the road.

63 dead newts. No other dead species seen. No live newts or other critters seen. 10 Santa Clara County Roads trucks working clearing brush, 15 other vehicles, 9 bikes.

December 11, 2019 (Wednesday) 1:30 am – 3:45 pm
We had about 10 days of rain, followed by a drier week.
During the survey it was drizzling part of the time. I documented 1 live and 235 dead newts, some were fresh, some not, but I only documented the ones there were newts for sure.
Other roadkills: one toad, one barn owl, a few millipedes, a Jerusalem cricket, a beetle larva. The live newts was crossing the road, moving away from the reservoir. A large male.
Coverage: north part - Jones trailhead to the stop sign (37.187875, -121.986516).
Rainfall: (MTD: 7.03 in; YTD: 9.88 in) The weather was wet, light drizzle.
Traffic: more traffic than previous times: One gravel truck, 40 cars (including many pickups), 3 bikes, 3 pedestrians. At about 3:30 maybe, Midpen's crew finished their maintenance work, and I saw 2 trucks and 7 maintenance pickups leaving the area. One of the Midpen people asked me how the newts are doing.

Coverage: South half of Alma Bridge Road, from the Aldercroft intersection to the stop sign. Two people searching.
