Okefenokee NWR a place to relax and connect with nature...

Okefenokee Chamber Of Commerce
https://www.facebook.com/pg/visitfolkston/posts/
April 14 at 8:51 AM · Michael Lusk said, During this time of social distancing and stay at home orders due to COVID-19, the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is here to provide our local community with a place to relax and connect with nature, while staying close to home and practicing safe social distancing. The refuge has limited hours and visitor services during this time - we are open Tuesday - Sunday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (closed on Monday). Bring your bicycles or your hiking shoes to enjoy the Swamp Island Drive and hiking trails, launch your personal boat, or canoe at the boat dock, or bring your fishing pole and a picnic lunch or purchase a “to go” lunch from Okefenokee Adventures (OA is serving lunch 11:30 - 2:30, Tuesday through Sunday). We are all in this together, so let’s all take care of each other, look out for our neighbors, support local businesses, and stay healthy so the first responders and medical workers can do their jobs safely. And on that note, a big shout out to all our responders, like our volunteer fire department, our police and sheriff deputies, and all the rest that are working so hard during this difficult time!

Online meeting set about Okefenokee mining plan

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers scheduled the “virtual public meeting” as it weighs a permit request for a mine in Charlton County, Ga. near the storied swamp.

The mining plan has alarmed many environmentalists and last week prompted the nonprofit American Rivers to include the Okefenokee and St. Marys River, which forms the Florida-Georgia border and connects the swamp to the Atlantic Ocean, on an annual list of America’s most endangered rivers. People can email questions ahead of the meeting, which will include a formal presentation and a question and answer session, according a Corps notice that outlines plans for the event.
