Mid December Update

The year seems pretty much complete. Submissions to the project are a trickle. I will be reporting numbers and try to keep things correct if new data arrives.

For the year, we have had 26,232 Observations, comprising 140 Species, from 1,071 Observers. Every Ohio county is represented in the data. These totals are good on observation and observer numbers, but short of the record years 2018 and 2019. 140 species is the most we've ever recorded in a year.

We had 110 New County Records, covering 58 species, in 54 counties, from 48 Observers. Again good numbers but short of high marks in 2018 and 2019.

No real surprises here. These are common species at a variety of wetland habitats. It's interesting that Fragile Forktail had more observations than Eastern Forktail for the second year in a row - that's never happened before. Our 2021 Eastern Forktail numbers were considerably below the trend from the Ohio Odonata Society database.

Again no surprises given the previous monthly reports. Most of the counties got a big lift from individual observers (more on that to come). No substitute for local people getting dragon-fever, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Great and varied habitat + core of dedicated observers = lots of species.

Terrific to see counties with around 100 observers.

Pond Skimmers and Forktails, consistent at many wetlands.

This is fun - Whitetail and Jewelwing have the most people reporting these species. Eye-catchers for sure.
