Dengue, Chikungunya and now Zika show value of focus on Mosquito vectors!

Hi all,

Here's a quick update on all fronts:

  1. Dengue appears to be slowing down on the Big Island, but we must remain vigilant since there was a recent case reported on Maui (origin unknown as of Feb 3rd). See the Hawaii Department of Health for more information and updates:

http://health.hawaii.gov/docd/dengue-outbreak-2015/

  1. The project is starting to take off. We how have over 50 observations: all project observations
  2. We have several new folks adding to the project: all users
  3. We've been getting interest from the Big Island community including Van Eden (observer vaneden) who has an active web-presence to teach people how to trap mosquitoes here: makemosquitotraps.org and crowd-fund to purchase traps here wefightdengue.org .

and Bob Martin (observer bobmartin) who, along with Van have been involved in a local Facebook group focused on the Dengue epidemic: Facebook Group on Dengue in Hawaii.

With the diligent work from new observers and online identifiers we are now poised (with several active members!) to begin to really ramp up the project to learn where the dangerous Aedes mosquitoes live! But we need more observations and more people! Keep observations coming, teach your friends how to use the iNaturalist app, login and identify mosquitoes and keep advocating for more mosquito vector control resources at the local, county, state and national level because even when the current Dengue epidemic is over remember Chikungunya and now Zika threaten Hawaii's shores.

Mahalo nui for your collaboration, keep up the great work and be safe!.

Durrell
