MBP is adding support for iNaturalist

Good news! We wanted to let you know that Maryland Biodiversity Project (a 501(c)3 non-profit cataloging Maryland's biodiversity) is adding support for sharing observations via iNaturalist! Maryland records added to iNaturalist are now automatically added to this MBP iNaturalist project and queued for addition to the MBP database. Joining our project here is encouraged but not required as all Maryland records are automatically aggregated. We will continue supporting Flickr-based submissions indefinitely, so changing over is encouraged but not required. Resubmitting photos on iNaturalist is also not required. Thank you for your continued support! Let us know if you have any questions!

Hi Bill,

That is good news. But does that mean if we submit a photo to iNaturalist it is unnecessary to also submit to the MBP Flickr group, but we can if we want to? Is there any advantage or disadvantage for MBP to also submitting on Flickr if already on iNat? Also what do you mean by "changing over is encouraged but not required"? Do you mean submitting to MBP through iNat rather than through Flickr?

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your continued support of MBP. Yes, submitting via iNaturalist will soon become the preferred method of submitting records to MBP as we can automate more of the process and take advantage of the global identification community here. For anyone who would like to continue using Flickr instead of iNaturalist for MBP sharing, that's not a problem. However, there is no need to submit in both places as it will increase editor work and increase the chances of duplicate records. That said, if you already have records in both places, it's not a problem. No need to go back and do extra work cleaning anything up. As far as wanting to add to Flickr as well as iNaturalist, please noted that the MBP Flickr group is just a temporary ingest queue and records are removed from the group as they're added. It's quite an arms race keeping the queue numbers low as interest and volume of submissions continue to increase.

Does that answer all of your questions? Thanks again!

Bill

Hi Bill,
Thank you for adding iNaturalist, as Flickr is an added expense for some of us. One question, my user names & emails are different on the two sites. How can I let you know who to attribute the iNaturalist photos to?
THANKS!
Bonnie B.

Quick update - This is now live and verified Maryland records with appropriate licenses are flowing into the main MBP site. We also have an iNaturalist integration FAQ page we're updating regularly at the top of the MBP home page here: https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/.
