Adriana's journal entry - Plants

  • The Hosta plant that I observed is a monocotyledon on the phylogenetic tree because it is a 'one seed leaf' plant and because its buds are below the soil level.
  • The Walnut tree that I observed has adapted to protect itself by releasing a toxic chemical that inhibits the growth of other nearby plants. This ensures that its roots can grow deep in the soil without barriers.
  • One adaptation that all plants require to live in the Montreal summer climate is the ability to survive in a temperate climate (hot summer with rain). Therefore, most of the leaves of my observed species are light-weight in order to capture the necessary sunlight and also be light enough to not be heavily weighed down when rain accumulates on them.
