The Natural Heritage Database Program is within the Division of Natural Heritage at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The Database Program uses Biotics, a powerful Oracle database with Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, to track tabular and spatial information about significant natural features, and endangered and threatened species in Illinois.
The database compiles information from a broad range of sources, including museum and herbarium collection records, publications, citizen scientists and experts throughout the state.
The purpose of this project is to compile endangered and threatened species sightings from all over the state of Illinois in order to add them to the national database. This information is essential to the Division of Natural Heritage in it's mission to protect, restore, manage, and promote the responsible use of the Illinois' native flora and fauna, natural communities, wildlife habitat, and ecosystems.
