HKISCNC ID PARTY!!

Hi Everyone!

As you know between 4 - 10 November, students from over 30 schools in Hong Kong will be making observations of nature around their school campuses on iNaturalist and they will need your help to offer identifications. They are encouraged to make 1st level IDs (i.e. Bird, Plant, Butterfly, etc) and I have made it clear that they are NOT to take pictures of indoor or outdoor potted plants.

As we really appreciate your assistance, I’d like to invite you to an ‘ID Party’ to further identify HKISCNC'19 observations on iNaturalist and engage with participants online. In the registration link, please let me know when you may come and how long you can stay for. I have budget to compensate you for your time during this session plus I'll have some food and drink to keep us going. Please remember to bring your laptops! Should be fun!

Date: Monday 11th November, 2019
Time: Anytime between 12nn - 9pm
Venue: WWF. 15/F, Manhattan Centre, 8 Kwai Cheong Rd., Kwai Chung, N.T.
Registration: https://form.jotform.me/93021264803449

In any case, please join the Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge 2019 project and help our students! The more they know, the more they care.

Thankyou!
Shaun

I've been looking through some of the unknowns and have a couple of comments:

A lot of students have tried to add a coarse ID, but have used it as a placeholder instead of selecting a taxon. I've been adding this comment: When you type a coarse ID, please select one of the options and not "use as placeholder". This helps your observations be seen by the iNaturalist community and receive a finer identification.

Some students are using placeholders that don't correspond to a taxon like "trees". I've been using a response similar to the following: "Plants" corresponds to a taxon in iNaturalist while "trees" does not, so it is better to add an ID like plants and select from the options rather than use trees.

Since I can only speak and write in English, this may not do a lot of good unless the students can read and write in English. However, this may be useful for others who can communicate with the students in their own language.

Hi @nathantaylor.

Thanks so much for leaving constructive messages to the students observations. Ultimately, we want to nurture their curiosity and maintain their use of iNat. Although, we have made bilingual resources available to all schools, there will still be the inevitable 'mis-use' of iNat (we've actually had a few selfies and potted plants despite pleading for the contrary!!) and all we can do is guide best practices rather than castigate the worst ones.

Cheers!
Shaun
