Sunday night: - the final lap.

Well done everybody. Another very successful day bioblitzing. The weather was not too cold, and Cape Town responded.
And as we approach our last day, we are sitting at position 1 for observations, 1 for species and 2 for observers. Thank you to all who contributed, big and small.

A few more observers have posted more than 100 observations: welcome and thanks to:
jeremy, photogenie, dive_in (yay: marine observations!), geoffspi, andrey & jacki

So what should our focus be on the last day?

The same as from yesterday it seems: Big gaps include -

  • Signal Hill and Lions Head
  • The top of Table Mountain
  • The north sandveld - Dassenberg
  • the north-east - Joostenberg
  • the far east - Landroskop and Steenbras.

Oh dear!! The forecast is for more rain from 11am to 3pm, with overcast all afternoon. What a bother. How are we going to reach our targets. I guess it is out early to make the most of the morning. Go for it - let us see how we do!

If we can plug these gaps we should be able to double our current number of species.
(Note that some species still have to be identified, and some data still have to be loaded - so if you know you got a high target species in the bag, please add a comment below!!)
Our totals are (this list is clickable: clicking it will show what we have seen - clicking on dipped will show what we still need).

I visited Uitkamp (Porcupine Trail) - about 30 species: the interesting areas are locked and need the key from Durbanville NR.

Tweat and Chat and Facebook (@GSBioblitz) and Instagram (gsbioblitz) and tell everyone to take part: simply upload observations onto iNaturalist from 25-28 September, using the app or the web!

Henri - asks
Not doing that well with joining the GSBCT. I can't seem to add them to observations ---it doesn't come up as a project I can add!!

Ans:
Please join the projects:
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/great-southern-bioblitz-2020-cape-town
&
https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/great-southern-bioblitz-umbrella
and they will automatically appear alongside for your contributions to these projects.

These are collections projects. You don’t add them to observations: you just join them and all observations that meet the filters are automatically displayed.

They are added to the project whether you join or not, so the purpose of joining is -
(1) to advertise the project,
(2) to provide you with a quick link to the project and its summaries, and
(3) to show which observations meet the project requirements and have been added.

Once you have joined you do not need to do anything else other than post lots and lots and lots of observations.

Have fun

PS: Note this project only collects WILD observations: so no captive or planted stuff!

Gigi asks:
When is the deadline for participation? By when must the IDs and uploads be done?

Ans:
I really dont know. The offical website and umbrella project say that such a period will exist, but no mention is made of if it is a few days or a week.
Let us assume that the deadline is late on Sunday night 4th October. But try and get done long before then ...

@tonyrebelo despite the weather this afternoon, I tried to cover a little bit of Signal Hill when I had the time. Pictures coming soon after I finish the ones for Newlands where I hiked yesterday.
