Mitigating red tide more than killing algae, researcher says.

California's red tide is called Pseudo-nitzchia and it produces neurotoxins called domoic acid. The chemical is lethal to fish, birds and marine mammals, most noticeably California sea lions.

California wild horses to be captured, activists fear slaughter.

One thousand wild horses are to be rounded up in California by the U.S. Forest Service and animal rights activists fear hundreds of them could be sold for slaughter.

Feds Propose Threatened Status for Humboldt Marten.

A furry relative to minks and otters and native to the West Coast may get federal protection as threatened under the Endangered Species Act due to lost habitat, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Friday.

There’s a bear in the backyard! Or there’s one in the fruit tree, on the porch or in the garbage.

These are routine calls that come into the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center. They’re also common reports to the Northern Division of the Fish and Wildlife Department, which covers Lassen, Plumas and central Butte counties.

On October 3, Councilman Mitchell Englander, a member of the Council’s Personnel and Animal Welfare (PAW) Committee, introduced a motion (CF-16-0585-S2), based on "an increase in coyote sightings in parks, open spaces and neighborhoods endangering all people, especially children."

300th nutria killed in California as officials worry giant swamp rats are spreading into the delta.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is not taking time to celebrate however. The department is currently expanding its operations in San Joaquin County, and is concerned by several reports of nutria on the doorstep of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, a critical region for California's agricultural infrastructure.
