The shot hole borer beetle could kill 38% of all trees in the L.A. region.

Pick a tree at random anywhere in Southern California and examine it closely. Chances are good that you will find small wet stains on its trunk. Those wet stains are most likely signs of a fatal tree disease that is spreading throughout the region at an alarming rate, and which has the potential to significantly change the way Southern California looks.

The disease is called Fusarium dieback, and it is transmitted by one type of fungus-farming beetle: the invasive shot hole borer.

The German Amateurs Who Discovered ‘Insect Armageddon’.

Lost in the flurry was the source of the news — the obscure, volunteer-run Entomological Society Krefeld, tucked away in western Germany near the Dutch border.

That a group composed not just of biology Ph.D.s but also chemists, electrical engineers, a schoolteacher and a physicist, among others, would be the ones to do such groundbreaking research did not surprise Dave Goulson, a bee expert at the University of Sussex, and co-author of a scientific article based on the group’s research and published this fall.

Lindsay Baldwin is not a chef. She isn't an expert on nutrition. She' is just a young woman who wanted to find a suitable protein source to her diet. She heard about entamophagy, the human consumption of insects and did some research. And now she makes these tasty little bugs part of her diet.
