Specialist Training for Budawang Coast Project Identifiers now 17 May via Zoom

13 May (Ulladulla) & 17 May (Nowra) sessions have been amalgamated into one Zoom session. See comments for registration link.
A recent survey to our long-time Moderators/Identifiers expressed the need for training to enhance the identifying experience on iNaturalist.
Thomas Mesaglio will share specialist knowledge/shortcuts on using and identifying on iNat, and his session will be specifically tailored for identifiers, or those that would like more information to become identifiers.
Prerequisites: you already have 2 out of 3 prerequisites - an iNat account, joined Budawang Coast iNat Project - do you have specialist interest/knowledge of particular flora and fauna?
Training dates:
13 May 10.00-12.30 Ulladulla -Training Room (Council Building) Light lunch included
17 May 1.30-3.30 Nowra - Shoalhaven Regional Gallery Light refreshments included
Each session is limited to 20 in person.
You can attend via Zoom or in the room!

6th Sea Slug Census ends 30 April

Now that the seas are calmer and the rain has eased, you have till 30 April to contribute to the South Coast 6th Sea Slug Census. Post sightings on iNaturalist!

Free Fisher Science Training Workshop - Kangaroo River: April 30, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Learn how to monitor the health of the Kangaroo River. Join OzFish on the Kangaroo River to learn how to complete a number of exciting monitoring activities that can tell us more about the health of this waterway and the types of animals it supports.
All necessary equipment and training will be provided on the day, so as long as you enjoy the outdoors, like learning new skills and meeting like-minded people, this day is for you. Lunch will be provided to volunteers. Please bring at least 2 litres of drinking water and wear long sleeves, long pants, a hat and sunscreen, enclosed shoes, and some shoes that can be wet if you wish to partake in waterbug sampling or help deploy the underwater cameras. The exact meeting location and parking instructions will be provided to those that register.

Immersive experience learning about traditional uses of seaweed in the Yuin Nation

Organised by South Coast Seaweed at Wimbie Beach Sat. 23 April 9:00 am – 12:00 pm (Eventbrite link below)

The workshop is to revitalise knowledge around traditional uses of seaweed, much like bush tucker provided by the land, take a journey with us to learn about the ocean and the vast underwater ecosystems that have provided for the Yuin nation for thousands of years.
Special guests include Lynne Thomas chatting about Dreamtime stories in the Yuin Nation and the amazing Muladha Gamara who will be Welcoming us on country with traditional dancing and a smoking ceremony using seaweed.
Cultural beach walk identifying different local seaweeds and their traditional uses. Learn about the traditional way of life of the Yuin people and their spiritual connection to the country and the Saltwater.

Green and Golden Bell Frog Workshop (family friendly) 13 April 10-12.30 - free - lunch included

Take a tour of Green and Golden Bell Frog habitat in Worrigee Nature Reserve with local ecologist Garry Daly. The reserve provides important habitat for this iconic species which was once common along the east coast of Australia, but is now one of the most threatened after an alarming decline in numbers over the last three decades.

Learn how you can contribute to conservation planning for our froggy friends by using the FrogID app. Also add to iNat. Build a frog hotel using recycled materials and take home some frog friendly plants to put in your backyard.

Shoalhaven Glossy Black-Cockatoo Aboriginal Advisory Group - EOI to secure Glossies in Shoalhaven, apply by 15 April

The Aboriginal Advisory Group will secure the future of Glossy Black-Cockatoos in the Shoalhaven by empowering local Aboriginal custodians to reconnect with fire impacted landscapes and build on their existing cultural knowledge and values of the species to develop a Healthy Country Plan (HCP) for Glossies into the future.
The Aboriginal Advisory Group will be supported by an Aboriginal Community Engagement Officer who commences in the role on 4 April 2022.

Submit a short statement about why you’re interested in securing a Healthy Country Plan for Glossy Black-Cockatoos to Simon.Tedder@environment.nsw.gov.au
EOI submissions will be assessed by Shoalhaven Council’s existing Aboriginal Advisory Committee.

6th South Coast Sea Slug Census is on again!

6th Sea Slug Census March 26 to April 30, from Green Cape to Kiama.

Come explore lagoons, intertidal reefs and shallow wharfs on the search for a wonderful variety of Nudibranchs, Sea Hares and other interesting gastropods! You, your family and friends are invited to join our various (free) activities such as snorkeling, walking, and diving to document some of the beautiful biodiversity of our region onto the iNaturalist database!
