Preparing for the upcoming City Nature Challenge this April 24-27

Dear Friend
As concerning as these times may be, they also offer many of us an opportunity to go out into our backyards and discover the wonderful creatures that live around us. iNaturalist, the world's greatest citizen science project, organizes a yearly City Nature Challenge. Observations that we make, on our phone, of the living creatures in our backyard, will be part of the challenge. We hope your organization, is interested in joining us by encouraging its members to go out and make observations during the City Nature Challenge.

What we are asking you to do
Please invite the members of your organization, school, library or club, to participate.
Ask them to download the iNaturalist app www.inaturalist.org on their smartphone.
Encourage them to make observations with their phone of living things in their backyard from Friday, April 24 through Monday April 27.
To prepare participants who are unfamiliar with iNaturalist, we have included a written tutorial in the attachment that you can share with your members.
A video with instructions, made by our team, is available on YouTube. Click here >

For participants who would like a little more help, there will be a series of half hour online training sessions, on Monday, April 20 at 8 p.m. and Wednesday, April 22 at 5 p.m. To register, email: BedfordiNaturalist@gmail.com,
If you have further questions, you are welcome to contact us anytime: BedfordiNaturalist@gmail.com
See you soon!
We are looking forward to meet you and your members in the iNaturalist community. Let's celebrate our local biodiversity with a great number of beautiful observations!
Thank you,

The Bedford iNaturalist Team,
Simon Skolnik, Gentian Falstrom, Murray Fisher, Fiona Mitchell, Filippine Hoogland

SAVE THE DATE: Biodiversity of Bedford event Sunday, September 29th

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all your great observations! We are now up to 1,440 Research Grade species in Bedford! That's incredible, to me. I know we can confirm thousands more, so if you are up for it, please use the Identify tool on the iNaturalist website: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?project_id=39472

But the real reason for this post is to announce our first-ever Biodiversity of Bedford event on Sunday, September 29th from 12:30pm-3pm. We're going to do it in our barn in Bedford Village, located at 50 Pound Ridge Road. Parking will be available in the Town Parking Lot behind the Presbyterian Church! Should be plenty of parking available as the service ends at 12pm noon. We'll have food and drinks for everyone - we are currently seeking a partner restaurant to help cater the event. (50 people max)

We'll have some presentations about iNaturalists and lots of experts (like you all!) on hand to help with training to use iNaturalist for observations and identifications. The goal of the event is to introduce the residents of Bedford to the amazing living organisms that surround them, with the hope of developing people into naturalists.

There will be a City Nature Challenge (https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2020) hosted by iNaturalist during Earth Day weekend (April 25,26, 2020), and we'd like to register Westchester County to participate.

I'll be posting something weekly to lead up to our September event, including more details on schedule and attendees. But for now we wanted you all to SAVE THE DATE!

Best,
Murray (@swampchicken) & Filippine (@filippine)

Biodiversity of Bedford iNaturalist event this fall

Hey everyone -

First of all, have you all checked out the "Biodiversity of Bedford (BOB)" project?? https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/biodiversity-of-bedford

We have over 1,300 species documented in Bedford! We have over 5,400 observations, and I am sure we could get to well over 2,500 species quickly if any of you wanted to spend a little bit of time Identifying species for us that you are familiar with. iNaturalist has a great Identifier tool, which allows you to filter what you identify. For example, here it is filtered for our project:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?project_id=39472

Anyway, along with two of our "BOB" superstars Fiona (@fmitchell), Filippine (@filippine) I am hosting an iNaturalist training event at our barn in Bedford this fall. We are aiming for a weeknight event in mid September. The event will include iNaturalist presentations & training, as well as socializing and some cocktails and food. We'd like to grow the numbers of people and expertise of our "Biodiversity of Bedford" group, and we'd also like to plan for a much larger, Westchester-wide event in early 2020.

Will you all help us make this event successful? We'll need all kinds of people who share our enthusiasm for observing, documenting, protecting and restoring biodiversity in Bedford!

We don't have a date yet, but wanted to put it on your radar. We are aiming for around 40 people.

Thanks!
Murray (and Fiona and Filippine)
