I would like to bring to everyone's attention the following discussion regarding the disposition
of Hypena masurialis records listed for Australia. There are 329 observations as of this
writing.
This dates from 8 months ago
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/81480058#activity_comment_32cd8b72-d69b-41e3-b5ed-1391968bd72a
and furthermore, The Coffs Harbour Butterfly House website removed H. masurialis and lists H. obacerralis
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/hypn/obacerralis.html
To sum up, Roger Kendrick concludes H. masurialis does not occur in Australia.
It is likely that virtually all of the Australian material so assigned actually refers to Hypena obacerralis
https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/480246-Hypena-obacerralis
Despite this, I see the persistent use of H. masurialis within iNaturalist and feel the need to bring
the matter to those closest to it by virtue of listing the species within their observations.
====================================================
It is not clear whether H. obliquarlis occurs in Australia.
The Australian Faunal Directory maintains H. masurialis. But H. masurialis is a junior synonym of
H. obliqualis ... which IS listed in AFD under Rhynchina. See..
https://biodiversity.org.au/afd/taxa/Rhynchina_obliquarlis
Of R. obliquarlis, there is nothing in BOLD Systems.
However, this Coffs Harbour ref:
http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/hypn/obliquarlis.html
depicts three different forms including an examople labeled
Hypena masurialis but may well refer to H. obacerralis.
Suggested course of action within iNaturalist.
1. Stop using H. masurialis as this is clearly inappropriate.
2. Use Hypena sp. if you think we need to approach the
H. obacerralis / Rhynchina (Hypena) obliquarlis conservatively.3. Opt for H. obacerralis as a relevant placeholder until such time the
taxonomy / identification is further clarified.4. Reconsider your past identifications of H. masurialis and substitute either (2) or (3).

Thanks Vic.
I've re-ID'd all of my own obs and also my past IDs of H. masurialis.
For any interested, an easy way to find your past identifications is to use the link below. You will need to change the number to your own user ID though:
ie "ident_user_id=661392¬_user_id=661392" these two numbers need to be changed to your own user ID number.

cheers Nick
Thanks for the info, @vicfazio3. I changed the name of my former Hypena masurialis
Thanks for the update @vicfazio3, similarly have amended my obs and will amend any IDs I’ve made (thanks for the tip @nicklambert)
Thanks Vic I am on to mine and will sort them all out.
Thanks @vicfazio3. Have amended my sightings and Matt's.
Thanks @vicfazio3 Will change any of my sightings.
@vicfazio3
Thanks Vic, I have amended all my observations.
Thanks @vicfazio3 have changed mine
Thanks @vicfazio3 - I'll also contact Cathy Byrne who's been working on the AFD to update Lepidoptera and I'll look into what can be done on the LepIndex side (I'm busy trying to get the latest and more easily edited version to feed into Catalogue of Life and GBIF).
FWIW, here is the page where Rhynchina kengkalis ab. obliqualis Warren 1913 was described (or more accurately the English translation of it), along with the associated plate including kengkalis:
https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/35929343
https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/35929583
And here is the description of Hypena obliqualis Kollar, 1844 - note there is no 'r' after all (aaaaaaaargh!):
https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/52443611
Thanks very much Victor. I've changed all my H. masurialis to H. obacerralis
Cheers Donald, I was wondering about that spelling.
Where does Rhynchina obliqualis come into the story or is it a seperate species, as inat wants to use this instead oh H.obliqualis
@tinnanbar Gary, they are synonymous. I do not know which should take precedent only that iNat normally follows AFD which uses Rhynchina.
Thanks Vic I'll change them to Rhynchina obliquali
