That's the general agenda so far! It's a bit of a whirlwind of a trip, but I think it'll give me a good flavor of the different areas around South Florida. While my wife is in the fabric stores, I'll be around the ditches, getting some of the weeds and maybe some bugs. :) Hopefully the weather cooperates for the nature stuff. If I'm missing some crazy good nature spots, or some of my nature parks/spots should be skipped, PLEASE let me know! Oh, and if you know of any other fabric stores, please let me know that too. ;)

Using the observations from Jan, Feb, and December in this area for some ID help:

Oh, and if you're in/around South Florida at this time, toss me a text!

Jay Keller might have some suggestions as well since he moved to FL.

Jay Keller has locations for almost all the spurges of south FL if you want to pick up any of those species.

Other places you should keep in mind:

When driving US 41 to Naples, stop along the various roads and trails at Big Cypress National Preserve. Drive Loop Road if you have the time.
Fakahatchee Strand (loads of orchids here!)...if you have time drive Janes Scenic Drive and get out and hike along East Main Trail. If not, at least pop into the boardwalk trail that is on US 41 next to an Indian camp.

Good call on Collier Seminole!

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Naples is also a must if you have time. Hopefully you are going to Ding Darling NWR if you are in Sanibel!

Around Lake O: Fisheating Creek in Palmdale, Dinner Island Ranch WMA

That last day, I wish you had more time to get up to Jonathan Dickinson State Park but it is probably out of your way. Sounds like it will be jam packed---I could tell you many more places to go! In general, if you see a green space on a map it is probably worth seeing! Enjoy!

You may have your Keys stuff already mapped out but if you like fish or key lime pie I totally suggest eating at SS Wreck and Galley in Marathon, it's soooo yummy - if you do, look around the western/left side of the building for Madagascar Day Gecko if you want, there was one that loves hanging out there in the fall! The area around Marathon proper is tough for naturalizing because places are closed either due to Irma damages or are just very pricey. If you can get into nearby Long Key SP or have time for it, I suggest it, the trail rocks (it used to be a loop but now you have to backtrack because the end is damaged, make sure you have shoes that can get wet).

If you go to Big Pine Key the Fred C Manillo Wildlife Trail has a super good little butterfly garden in the parking lot! But beware that the key is pretty big with long drives so if you aren't going near there at all, skip it. ;) But I had a great time standing there for two hours getting a nice variety (and a Key Deer came to visit).
