Folks call me 'the woodpecker guy', a name which I have earned as the author of the Peterson Reference Guide to Woodpeckers of North America. I speak across the continent and beyond on a wide range of woodpecker ecology and conservation topics. I have a particular interest in hybridization among woodpeckers, with special expertise in sapsucker hybridization.

Woodpeckers aside, I am a professional naturalist, guiding full-time on four continents through Naturalist Journeys and my own company, Paradise Birding. From the orchids of Borneo to the mollusks of Sicily, I enjoy learning about all things in nature and sharing my enthusiasm and expertise with others.
