Descrição

Having only found males before, I was really excited to find this critter stranded in our dog food bowl (always outside our door). I thought I would only ever find females if I was lifting rocks or wood...but this one unwittingly came to me.

I wasn't going to add these photos, as the moth was too large for my lens so the images are a mess. When I was putting them on our website I finally noticed that this is one without the angled bar, so it is more interesting than I thought. I think this genus is under review. There seemed to be a lot of these moths being sighted at windows during lockdown. I wondered if we were seeing them because a large hockey centre a couple of km away had turned its huge lights out.

Even though it is golden, which often throws me...I thought this would be easy to ID. It isn't :-(. It was on the window locked out, while we were in lockdown.

Descrição

I was probably busier than ever during lockdown as I readjusted to online teaching, but during the weekends I gave the garden some hard pruning. Not much was about, but I could get some detail on our common garden species. This was on blackberry (which explains the need for some gardening ;-). )

Descrição

5-6mm. I was pruning during lockdown and found this between two leaves. It barely moved. There are 18 hours between the photos on the leaf, and the photos on wood where the ootheca has dried. The cockroach was running like the wind by the second round of photos, which were just after its re-release back in the garden. Last I heard, this was an undescribed species of Balta. I know QVMAG was working on cockroaches, so maybe it now has a name. These are common in our suburban garden.

Another longicorn beetle with distinctive looking markings that I can't identify :(. I offend it just sitting (potentially dead) on our deck railing, which is under a large Blackwood.

These moths lay eggs on surfaces and then disguise them with wads of soft dark scales. It's easy to see where the supply comes from ;-). Painted cup moth Doratifera oxleyi,

Descrição

These are a blend of 3 different pupa and their emerged moths. My daughter had been (weirdly) weeding (possibly for the first time in her 15 years) and delivered me 2 cocoons and I pupa that she had accidentally removed from the cocoon. I was in a hurry so I took a few photos, then packed them all into a tank together to see what emerged. Normally I am more meticulous. about 2 weeks later I noticed two moths, and I had clearly missed a third which had camouflaged so well in my soil base and died. The other two were photographed and returned to their original location (although above ground :-). ). I read that these are found near Nasturtiums, and our garden is certainly covered in this plant.

There are lots of other more organised photos here:

I found a Ceraon adult on this bush, and then this nymph, which I immediately thought was a Sextius nymph. Having a good look now, I think that is unlikely. There was an attendant ant lurking in the background but I couldn't get it out of the shadow.

Cryptic but hopefully interesting.....

Above the high tide line there were lots of oval holes in the sand. I had a look and could see one of the spider wasps working away to clear the burrow. Not at all easy to get a photo. I have better photos of the wasp species coming up sometime soon.
