Just 15 minutes before Suzanne (one of the nice folks who live by this park) had told us she’d heard a myrtle warbler in their yard recently, and then Gretchen spotted an odd looking yellow-rump on the park grass and I was excited to see it was a male myrtle! Dark face mask, pointed white throat corners, white eyebrow— looks good to me. Talk about serendipity.

Got several looks at the hooded oriole who’s been hanging in this park today, flying from palm tree to palm tree, and then eventually singing away in this deciduous tree.

tristanmcknightDescrição
Poor (live but terrified) baby mourning dove that fell out of its nest when a Cooper’s hawk attacked today (the other fledgling got eaten, mama got away). We called the rehab center and they said to try and put it back in the nest, so here’s hoping it doesn’t get just picked off tomorrow. While I’m all for supporting predators, it was kinda traumatic to watch the nest we’d been watching for weeks get raided. And then right after the Cooper’s hawk passed through the local pair of red-tails came for a while, then a vulture soared overhead— we weren’t sure if it would make it one hour even!

The Lucy’s warblers have been all over lately! Hitting our yard up every 20 minutes it seems. Fun to watch them sip nectar from these flowers. Though frustrating that the Merlin app can’t differentiate songs from members of this genus better!

Hammond’s flycatcher who was in the same tree that the black phoebes were using for their base. I’d heard it calling an hour before across the river, then found it quietly flitting in the branches when I came over.

Género MelospizaObservador
tristanmcknightDescrição
Probably just another Lincoln’s sparrow (there were lots of them here!), but the Merlin app did repeatedly tag a swamp sparrow calling here. Not sure if this is the individual I was hearing (it was confusing with lots of birds in the brush), but I figured I’d throw it up and see what other folks say. Wing coverts don’t look that rufous to me, and I’m not sure how much of the blurry streaking on the breast is due to low-light photos.

My first hummingbird nest of the year! Watched the female come and feed these two babies a couple times.
I’m not seeing as much nesting activity in the olive grove on Park Ave like last year— I wonder if the construction and pruning that’s been happening there scared many birds away?

These were hard to get a photo of, but they were calling loudly right nearby (I've uploaded a supercut of clear bits from my recordings). With the audio, I think this is clear enough to ID with the speckled back, throat line, indistinct head pattern, and long tail. My first time with this species.

Baby sandpiper poking around the river. At first I was wondering about a baby sand plover, but the head patterning looks pretty similar to fledgling spotted sandpipers which would be close to the common sandpiper. But feel free to correct me or bump it up if this can't be relatively confidently identified.
