Oh, wish I had better quality photos... I'm guessing Cooper's. One photo includes a small segment of leg. Looks to be an adult. A couple shots of it looking back at me almost looked like a Merlin, but let's stick to the infamous cousins... Cooper's vs. Sharpie. (3rd image shows small segment of right leg.)

American Beavers were trapped in an adjacent pond, taking down several trees, including some large Alder or Cottonwoods. (They had been trying to trap that one as well.)
The day before I took this photo nearly all ducks and geese were out of the water, and the ducks were mostly staring at it. In most cases, this means an otter is in the water, something that happened for the first time in 3-1/2 months (that I saw anyway) just a few days ago. The day the otter visited (I believe it was the juvenile from this spring... it was much slower consuming the prey it caught (two huge bullfrogs must have been hibernating).
I now wonder if the Beaver was active for a bit of time and just looked a bit too much like the otter.

Effort was made to trap this in early Jan 2024... not sure whether it was ultimately successful.
