Triangular head. Got annoyed when I (gently) poked its tail and rattled tail while going head first into a hole. Didn’t get a good look at eyes but triangular head (plus patch shape) indicative.

Noted the “black marks on lip scales” in the photo. It looked larger than I thought a garter snake would run so was thinking rat snake. (And in perusing the ‘net, is there an upstate snake J.D. Wilson has missed?)
