Descrição

It doesn't squirrels long to strip the cone bracts and extract the numerous seeds from each cone with their teeth.

The squirrel pictured here finished off a cone (about 50 seeds) in less than 2 minutes. Studies have shown red squirrels can consume up to 145 cones per day.

My first thoughts were cougar. As this is typical area for them - winter Bighorn Sheep range plus lots of deer and snowshoe hare tracks in the area. But then the stride seems a bit short. The second photo has a coyote print beside for comparison.

So looking forward to what other think.

Conifer seeds like this Douglas Fir (https://inaturalist.ca/observations/20793452) are the American Red Squirrel's main winter food. Hundreds of cones (https://inaturalist.ca/observations/22475131) are clipped from the trees and cached in middens – a large accumulation of cones, scales, and stripped cone cores. Basically a Red Squirrel's food cache.
