A brown band was observed on the dorsal surface of its tail when it was flying.

Survey of red admirals maintaining territories on the Iowa State University campus

Survey ended prematurely due to dark overcast moving in after 8:17 pm. No butterflies were observed on the east half of campus after then.

Photo shows the location where a swarm of from 10 to 12 red admirals were occupying a territory. No clear photos of the butterflies themselves were obtained.
