I have seen this everywhere I’m not sure what it is or if the leaves only occur at the terminus of the stalk naturally or If other leaves have been eaten, floppy opposites leaves with almost no real defined petiole but actual stalk of plant is long - maybe 3 or 4 feet

Definitely a quercus - not sure if it’s a rubra? very low in the canopy so that may affect the leaves being oddly shaped with very little lobing, does have red oak bristle

I think this is a chimaphila but it’s fairly large, 6 palmately compound with only one terminal set of leaflets per plant, very spiky margins, growing in a patch of many other of the same plant
