Descrição

I was positively delighted to spot this male resting on the underside of a Pyrus sp. leaf. I have been wanting to see one of these wasps for so many years now... Unfortunately, it did not allow for a close approach, flying off as soon as I attempted to get within range for some macro shots. Nonetheless, I did my best to run this through the excellent key provided by the Canadian Journal of Arthropod Identification:
https://cjai.biologicalsurvey.ca/sgsbws_21/Siricidae/Keys/Urocerus/key_urocerus_males.html
I was hoping to be able to confidently distinguish between U. flavicornis and U. albicornis. The measurements of the metatarsomere and metatibia seem to support U. flavicornis, but I think perhaps those are supposed to be measurements taken from a lateral view (?) and I am limited to this dorsal perspective. So, my measurements may well be inaccurate... I would very much appreciate input from anyone else out there who has expertise with this genus or is willing to also try running it through the key. Thanks!

To the best of my understanding, one of the diagnostic features for this species is a lack of white markings immediately posterior to the eye, which I believe can be seen clearly in the first of my photos.

I have taken to shaking out my clothes in the bathtub after walking through the meadow -- it's a good way to remove and spot any fleas that may have hitched a ride. Still trying to figure out if the fleas are associated with the deer or vole population (maybe, both?) which are quite active in that area.... On this day, I was happily rewarded with the discovery of this tiny teneb. Please excuse the stray hairs and lint. :)

There was a rather significant number of winged ants taking to the air in the meadow and several of these yellowjackets were deftly capturing the weak-flying ants before they could get very far. I was fascinated by a seemingly common method of feeding which involved hanging upside down from the grass by one clawed foot, thereby leaving all their other legs free to help in holding and manipulating their prey.

Leafmines on Coastal Brookfoam (Boykinia occidentalis).

Note: This is a cultivated plant that is growing amongst wild Youth on Age (Tolmiea menziesii), but I believe the mines were only occurring on the Boykinia leaves.

[UPDATE: Not leafmines after all... see Charley Eiseman's comments below.]

Very curious about this rolled leaf with mines.... The plant is Cooley's Hedge-Nettle (Stachys chamissonis var. cooleyae). From reading my incredibly helpful reference book, Leafminers of North America, (highly recommended!) I know that the miner likely responsible for these blotches is the agromyzid fly, Nemorimyza posticata. So... @ceiseman, if that's the case here, I am just wondering if the insect that rolled the leaf did so after the leaf was mined or vice-a-versa? Or, is something else entirely going on here?

[UPDATE: Turns out this is actually an example of "window feeding" and not leafmining -- see comments below for more info!]
