This large capped, black mushroom was just about too buggy to handle. But looking at the widely spaced gills, and seeing other R. nigricans in various stages of growth, I am fairly certain this is it. This was a large specimen, an almost 7 inch diameter cap!

Went out into the woods, but did not find much. This was the only large fruiting mushroom I found that day. It has been dry and hot. Found in a mixed conifer forest, mostly Douglas fir.
This specimen was about 6 inches tall, and had the volva still attached and turning orangish.

This little button was really hard for me to key out. Because it was so young I was not able to get a spore print. The head is velvety and a light brown. The gills are more like little ridges at this point and barely observable under the rolled margin of the cap. the stipe is larger than the cap and also covered in velvet brown. There were a few of these fruiting in a hole in a decaying conifer tree stump.
