Nature Walk: October 29-November 12: Vertebrate Animals

My friend and I decided to explore the nature paths behind the reservoir. We went at around 3:30 in the afternoon. It was in the low 50's and the day was overcast. We decided we would take the back paths to Cleveland Circle. Almost as soon as getting on the path I heard an Eastern Gray Squirrel running through the fallen leaves. We followed him until he stopped moving and I was able to get a photo. Next, I noticed a male and female Mallard off on their own. Upon further examination of the Reservoir, I realized the majority of Mallards had all split off into male & female pairs. My friend informed me Mallards mate for life which explained their distribution in the Reservoir. Over the course of the walk I encountered a Swan (Great Egret) diving for aquatic plants as well as a Canadian goose swimming around. At this point in my walk I feared I would be unable to find a 5th vertebrate animal, however, my friend and I heard large group of birds chirping. It took us longer than it probably should have to locate the flock, but we eventually realized there was 20+ Bushtit in a small tree, probably trying to insulate heat. Despite the cold weather and overcast day, the nature walk was overall relaxing and I enjoyed the hunt to locate Vertebrate Animals.

Nature Walk: October 8-17

For this nature walk I explored the paths behind the running trail at the Reservoir. My friend and I conducted the walk at around 3:30 on October 16th. It was fifty six degrees and over cast, the coldest walk I had been on yet. During the walk we saw many small animals and fungi, however, in line with this walk's theme we chose to only take photos of plants we thought were unique. Over the course of our walk we saw plants with yellow flowers, purple flowers, and blue berries (Goldenrods and Toadflax, Hydrangeas, and Buckthorn respectively). One section of the trail broke off and took us to several large rocks. Growing in front of one of them was a Sand Heath. The Sand Heath caught my eye because it looked shockingly similar to a Christmas tree. All in all the walk was a relaxing event and I was pleased with the variety of plants found.

Nature Walk: September 20-27

Today I went for a walk around the Reservoir with my mom and brother (they were visiting for parents weekend). At the very start of the walk we saw a pretty purple flower amongst a sea of uncut grass. It was a cool seventy degrees and a nice sunny day. The walk itself was particularly enjoyable and relaxing. While walking the perimeter I saw a large group of ducks playing at the edge of the water and a butterfly pollinating a yellow flower. Besides that, while walking I found a little dirt path that led back into a wooded area. I went down the path and ended up climbing a tree with my little brother. Once we were finished we continued walking where we came across two different types of berries (pokeberries and Ampelopsis berries). All in all the walk was very interesting and enjoyable.

Nature Walk: September 10-17

I conducted my nature walk at Hammond Pond Nature Reserve as well through parts of the Webster Conservation Era. I entered through the main gate of Hammond Pond closest to BC and crossed the T tracks into the much larger Webster Conservation Era. The weather was very nice and the temperature was around seventy degrees. It was sunny outside but the area I walked was primarily shaded. I encountered a variety of organisms ranging from duckweed growing on a stalled creek to bumble bee's pollinating flowers. I even encountered large growths of Nettles, Goldenrods, and even a small growth of Platterful Mushrooms. The most interesting thing about the walk was getting the opportunity to climb semi large rock formations and enjoy a beautiful afternoon outside.
