A note on the two Sphingidae "Complex" groups in the United States

This post is meant to store information about the two Sphingidae "Complex" groups in the United States.

  1. Sphinx gordius and Sphinx poecila = Complex Sphinx gordius

You cannot reliably differentiate the adults or larvae of Sphinx gordius and Sphinx poecila morphologically. As of right now, barcoding the COI gene is the best method.

We also are unclear of the range. There are barcoded gordius specimens in Canada and also poecila from as far south as New Jersey.

  1. Protambulyx strigilis and Protambulyx carteri = Complex Protambulyx strigilis

With the inclusion of Protambulyx carteri in the latest North American Lepidoptera checklist, the identification of this pair becomes impossible with photographic evidence only. Both P. strigilis and P. carteri are found in Florida (see links below), and can only be differentiated by barcode or genitalic dissection.
